1976 International Harvester Scout Traveler 4X4 Convertible SUV

The International Harvester Scout was an American civilian off-road sport utility vehicle.  International Harvester had been building tough trucks and pickups since 1907 and was a highly respected manufacturer of serious commercial vehicles.   The Scout and second generation Scout II, which is the vehicle you’re looking at, were IH’s entry into the civilian vehicle category as a competitor to the Jeep. Scouts were produced as two-door vehicles with options of a removable full hard or soft top.

Scouts were manufactured from 1961 to 1980, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This Scout II Traveler (built only from 1976–1980) has a removable fiberglass hardtop and an extended (118 in) wheelbase that allows for an optional third row of seats.

The first Scout was introduced in 1960. The Scout II was introduced in 1971. The basic sheet metal remained the unchanged until production stopped on October 21, 1980. Most significantly, the Scout set the stage for future 4-wheel drive recreational vehicles of the '70s, '80s, and '90s, and the Scout II was introduced to the U.S. a full ten years before the Range Rover, to which it is often compared.

While the Scout was far less expensive than the Range Rover, it held more people/cargo and could traverse off-road challenges with the best of them. Its clean, timeless lines and phenomenal off-road performance have made Scouts a favorite of both off-roaders and collectors.

This IH Scout Traveler is equipped with the optional 345 ci V-8 engine (the top-of-the-line), Automatic Transmission, 2-speed Transfer Case, front locking hubs, a removable, reinforced fiberglass hardtop, deluxe trim and upholstery, power steering, disc brakes, heater/defroster, full instrumentation, chrome front and rear bumpers, bucket seats, and, best of all, air conditioning. (What’s better than cruising along on a hot, summer day, top down and the A/C  on?)

This Scout is in the finest condition of any International I have ever seen, with flawless paint, mint interior, detailed engine compartment, immaculate undercarriage, fully sorted mechanicals, and no rust anywhere whatsoever. It is a Southern car, owned by a serious International enthusiast, as evidenced by its condition, the collection of authentic, original documents (shop and owner’s manuals, correct decals, records, etc.) and a few show trophies, to boot.

If you’re considering a new SUV, I doubt there is a more rugged, more capable or better looking vehicle available at twice the price. And none of them – none –are convertibles. Not to mention that Scouts are better than money in the bank; they will appreciate as you drive. The first day’s depreciation of a new Range Rover will more than pay for this truck!
